Invisalign vs Braces: What You Need to Know

invisalign-blog

When it comes to getting straighter teeth, there are generally two options: braces or Invisalign invisible aligners. Let's take a look at some of the things you should take into consideration when making a decision.

  • Appearance
  • Eating habits
  • Brushing & Flossing
  • Convenience
  • Cost

Appearance

Braces are obvious, Invisalign is nearly invisible.

It almost goes without saying that appearances are important. It's why you're looking into straightening your teeth in the first place! Here, Invisalign has a clear advantage.

Your friends, family, colleagues and classmates are not likely to notice that you're wearing Invisalign's clear aligners. Braces, on the other hand, are very noticeable.

While of course there's nothing wrong with braces, they might make you or your child less comfortable smiling around other people. Having confidence in smiling is important, and this sways many people in favor of Invisalign.

Eating Habits

Braces require you to avoid certain foods. Invisalign doesn't make you change the way you eat at all.

While wearing braces, you'll have to avoid sticky or tough foods. There's a risk that certain foods will dislodge a bracket or wire, and you'll have to get this fixed for the braces to work.

With Invisalign, you can continue to eat the foods that you normally enjoy. This is another case where the clear aligners have the advantage.

Brushing & Flossing

Braces require special care to prevent complications. Invisalign allows you to brush and floss as normal.

You'll need to take special care when brushing and flossing while you're wearing braces. If you aren't thorough enough, plaque build-up can happen which will cause staining and decay.

With Invisalign, you can remove the clear aligners, brushing and flossing as you normally would.

Convenience

Braces require more office visits. Invisalign requires less office visits.

When using braces to straighten your teeth, you'll need to visit the orthodontist regularly to have the braces adjusted.

Invisalign requires less frequent visits. Your dentist doesn't need to adjust the aligners. Rather, you'll receive new aligners as your teeth become straighter, and you'll only need to visit the dentist to check on progress.

Considering many people have a busy schedule, Invisalign has the advantage in terms of convenience.

Cost

Braces generally cost between $1,700 and $6,000. Invisalign starts at $2,400.

Cost is one area in which braces have a bit of an advantage. With both Invisalign and braces, the cost depends on the current condition of your teeth. We offer a free consultation to let you know your individual cost.

While Invisalign may be more costly, our patients find that it's worth the comfort, convenience and subtlety they get when wearing them.
